NTOI NEWSLETTER OCTOBER 2018

Welcome to our October newsletter! We had a great week last week on the CPD event circuit with the BioCare, Nutri Advanced, and  Cytoplan seminars. Feedback from members on these events was hugely positive and good attendance was reported.

This week we had Pharma Nord in Cork, with our own Brendan O'Brien -  and
The Dr Clare Dilis herbal webinar.
(Just a note on this webinar, Dr Clare was speaking generally about all the herbs that are useful for low vagal tone due to stress. She mentioned the herb St. John's Wort in this context. Dr Clare was not suggesting that NT's should prescribe this herb for clients. This herb is only available in Ireland under prescription from a medical doctor or medical herbalist).
Also don't forget to get your tickets for the event of the year!
The 3rd Annual Lifestyle and Functional Medicine Conference, Galway -   The Galmont Hotel 3rd & 4th Nov 8:00 am - 6:00 pm 14 CPD (both days) TBC

10 Evidence-Based Benefits of Manganese

The health benefits of manganese include healthy bones and better metabolism. It also acts as a co-enzyme to assist metabolic activities in the human body. Apart from these, there are other health benefits of manganese including the formation of connective tissues, absorption of calcium, proper functioning of the thyroid gland and sex hormones, regulation of blood sugar level, and proper metabolism of fats and carbohydrates. Read the article for the full list!

What is Manganese?
Manganese is a naturally occurring mineral in our bodies in very small amounts. It is an actual component of manganese superoxide dismutase enzyme. It is a powerful antioxidant that seeks out the free radicals in the human body and neutralizes these damaging particles, thereby preventing many of the potential dangers they cause.

The body may contain, at most, 20 mg of manganese, which is concentrated in our kidneys, pancreas, liver, and bones. It is very important for the normal functioning of the brain and proper activity of our nervous system throughout the body. As far as research can tell, it is an essential trace mineral for every form of life.

Deficiency Symptoms of Manganese
The symptoms of manganese deficiency include high blood pressure, heart ailments, muscular contraction, bone malformation, high cholesterol, poor eyesight, hearing trouble, severe memory loss, shivers, and tremors. Even though some medical experts argue that manganese deficiency is quite rare, more than 35 % of the world population is possibly deficient. Poor dietary habits are the leading cause of such deficiencies.

Alzheimer’s can have its roots in infection-triggered autoimmunity

A recent study we conducted showed infections — bacterial, viral, parasitic, mold and yeast — may trigger the development of Alzheimer’s disease in a mechanism similar to the development of autoimmunity.

The study, published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease (JAD), examined how infections may play a role in the development of Alzheimer’s Disease (AD). We performed the study in collaboration with Harvard Medical School, Loma Linda University School of Medicine, Immunosciences Laboratory, and University of California Riverside.

Our research showed how cross-reactivity — a “mistaken identity” immune reaction that can occur from in infection — may also be a factor in developing Alzheimer’s disease. This means that bacterial, viral, parasitic, mold and yeast antigens can trigger immunological attacks in the brain that foster the development of Alzheimer’s and other brain degenerative diseases.

This article is written by one of the speakers at the The 3rd Annual Lifestyle and Functional Medicine Conference, Galway - Datis Kharrazian, PhD, DHSc, DC, MS, MMSc, FACN.

He is a clinical research scientist, academic professor, and a functional medicine health care provider. He specializes in developing evidence-based models to treat autoimmune, neurological, and unidentified chronic diseases with non-pharmaceutical applications such as diet, nutrition, and lifestyle medicine.  His academic and clinical research has been featured in numerous documentaries and his clinical models of functional medicine are used by several academic institutions and thousands of health care providers throughout the world.

How to Set a Price for Your Service

The price you charge for your product or service is one of the most important business decisions you make. Setting a price that is too high or too low will - at best - limit your business growth. At worst, it could cause serious problems for your sales and cash flow.

If you're starting a business, carefully consider your pricing strategy before you start. Established businesses can improve their profitability through regular pricing reviews.

When setting your prices you must make sure that the price and sales levels you set will allow your business to be profitable. You must also take note of where your product or service stands when compared with your competition.

Knowing the difference between cost and value can increase profitability:
  • the cost of your product or service is the amount you spend to produce it
  • the price is your financial reward for providing the product or service
  • the value is what your customer believes the product or service is worth to them
Pricing should be in line with the value of the benefits that your business provides for its customers, while also bearing in mind the prices your competitors charge

The Facebook Pixel: What It Is and How to Use It

The Facebook pixel is powerful because it shows you how successful your Facebook advertising campaigns actually are and helps you reach new, relevant audiences. And if you want to optimize your Facebook advertising strategy, we recommend taking advantage of it. Read on to learn what exactly a Facebook pixel is, its capabilities, and how to create one today.

When someone clicks through to your website from an ad and takes an action, like completing a purchase, your Facebook pixel will trigger and report the action in Facebook Ads manager. This allows you to see if they completed the desired action of the ad like buying a product or filling out a landing page -- all on Facebook.

The Facebook pixel gives you deep insight into your marketing strategy because it measures your ad’s conversion rate, not just its click-through rate. This adds another layer of analytics that paints a clear picture of your buyer’s journey from ad to purchase.

For instance, if one of your ads' click through-rate is high, but the conversion rate is low, then your ad creative and landing page probably aren’t aligned.

You can also use website visitor and customer data collected from your Facebook pixel to refine your distribution strategy in several ways.
